Lindsey Willow isstuck in the tiny town of Elford with her Aunty Jen, along with a parcel of problems she wraps up inside herself, and a dork-brain called Martin. She hates it, but doesn't want to go home to her arguing parents. Then she encounters Skitterfoot Leaper, a cat-like creature that has leapt out of its own world because, like Lindsey, it can't cope with the bickering there.
