The people who live in the påa below his cave call him Ngåakau Pono, Loyal Heart, and he has been looking after the people for hundreds of years. When the Påakehåa arrive in New Zealand, Ngåakau Pono's people start to leave the påa. With no one left to look after, the taniwha sleeps for weeks and months and years until, finally, the sound of the karanga wakes him. The people have returned to the påa and he is not the forgotten taniwha any more. Suggested level: junior
